Most Anticipated of 2016: #1 The Rebirth of Blink-182

This has been the talk of the pop punk world for over a year at this point. We’ve heard rumors of a new Blink-182 record almost every year for half a decade, with only one LP and an EP to show for it. But this is a new Blink-182, and they’re just as anxious as we are.

It actually feels like it’s happening this time. Ever since the departure of Tom DeLonge last year and the addition of Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba as guitarist, the band has been active and vocal, with updates every couple of months in regards to songwriting for the new album. It’s been way too long since we’ve heard anything from Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker, and from the interviews over the last year, they sound more energized and enthusiastic about what comes next for Blink than they have for years.

It really is impossible to know what to expect from this new form of Blink-182. Will it be the polished, mature and artsy pop punk of the last few albums? Will it be a return of the ungodly catchy skate punk and dick jokes that launched the pop punk age of the early 2000s? Or will it be something else entirely, since we’re dealing with a new Blink-182?

The only thing standing in the way is expectation. New Blink-182 music has been perched high among the most anticipated lists every year since 2009, with very little to show for it. Blink-182 is beloved. Fans have had their hopes raised before only to be disappointed. But this time, we know it’s on the way. This is arguably the most anticipated pop punk event of the decade, and there are many, many ways that it won’t live up to the expectations thrust upon it (Neighborhoods, anyone?).

But we haven’t seen Blink-182 this excited to be making music since Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are excited. Matt Skiba is excited. And each musician has very, very rarely put out anything disappointing, regardless of project.

Whatever the outcome, this does feel like the year of Blink-182’s rebirth. With a new album, a tour is undoubtedly to follow, hopefully carrying the same energy required to put the album together. With the tumultuous path Blink-182 has tread over the last decade, seeing the trio with a newfound spirit is sure to the biggest event in punk rock this year.

Most Anticipated of 2016: #2 Pierce the Veil Finally Deliver

The Sky is the Limit

When Pierce the Veil released “The Divine Zero” last June, just in time for their run on the Vans Warped Tour, it appeared that the wait for their overdue follow up to 2012’s Collide with the Sky was finally over. Six months later, the wait continues. Will 2016 finally bring one of the most anticipated post-hardcore records in recent memory?

Whether it be writer’s block or otherwise that has kept the San Diego act from returning with a new album, Pierce the Veil have lost little in terms of interest. Still one of the scene’s biggest draws, the band have been able to weather the lull thanks to the lasting power of Collide with the Sky, a surprisingly progressive album, chock full of energy.

That energy translates well to Pierce the Veil’s stellar live performance, which has been another saving grace for the band during this relative stillness. Still, you can feel the confusion and worry setting in with fans as the clock continues to tick. It’s not unprecedented for a band this talented and possessing this much scene capital to fail to follow through on promises and remain in relative limbo (*cough* Saosin *cough*).

But amidst all the foot tapping and hand wringing, there remains the truth that Vic Fuentes, one of emo-core’s most exciting vocalists and songwriters and an admitted perfectionist, could very well be putting the finishing touches on a masterpiece. If any band in the scene is capable of delivering an album that meets the kind of ungodly expectations that this one now does, it just might be Pierce the Veil.

No matter the outcome, after nearly four years of singing the same songs, fans are ready to be rewarded for their patience. It’s time for the talking to end and the music to begin.

Most Anticipated of 2016: #3 Underoath’s Unlikely Return

They’re Only Chasing Rebirth

As post-hardcore finds itself at a crossroads, one of the genre’s linchpins has returned from the abyss. Yes, Underoath have kept their responses on the possibility of new music ambiguous, but with a full U.S. headlining tour slated for this spring, it’s impossible not to be excited by the potential.

It’s quite true that Underoath has nothing left to prove. The post-hardcore sextet left their mark on the scene over the course of their 16-year existence, dropping some of the most influential and important albums the genre has seen. Two of those albums, They’re Only Chasing Safety and Define the Great Line, will be performed in their entirety each night of their upcoming tour.

Just the chance to hear Spencer Chamberlain’s roar alongside Aaron Gillespie’s croon once again is more than most of us could have ever asked for, making their Rebirth tour (and reunion with drummer Gillespie) compelling enough. After last year’s heartbreaking self-released film, “Tired Violence”, who would have expected such a quick reconciliation when the inner-band pain appeared so palpable? Time will tell if all wounds are truly healed.

The band has made no promises on their future and has not ruled anything out, either. Whether this grand reunion is the long farewell that never happened when the band took their final bow in 2013 or a rekindling of a much-needed fire in the scene remains to be seen. Either way, the anticipation is killing us.

Most Anticipated of 2016: #4 Green Day Bites Back

King for a Day

Say what you want, but no one knows how to throw a curveball like Green Day. American Idiot not only reinvented a band everyone thought was done, 21st Century Breakdown proved that it wasn’t just a fluke and provided two of the finest rock albums this century. While the ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! trilogy met a more lukewarm reception, the band has made a career out of dropping masterpieces when no one is looking.

While I don’t expect their next album to impact rock the way American Idiot did, I do expect the band to have learned from the mistakes made with the trilogy and produce a highly polished and focused effort. While the trilogy felt like classic Green Day, with fun lyrics and loose, poppy songwriting, there’s a moderate to good chance that this will be another political album, especially given the never ending and escalating number of political scandals, elections and police scrutiny. It’s prime material for Billie Joe Armstrong to mine from.

There is the argument that all of their albums tend to sound similar, but if they changed their sound much people would bitch just as much in the other direction. With the American Idiot Broadway show under his belt, there is plenty for Armstrong to experiment with now on other projects, and he has a knack for writing rock operas. There’s no indication that this is the case so far, but a boy can dream.

Regardless, a national arena tour is much overdo from the band. Green Day put on the single best live performance I have ever seen, and I look forward to seeing them again every time they come even remotely close to wherever I happen to be.

Love them or hate them, new Green Day releases tend to be events in the rock community that forces the mainstream radio to shine a light on punk rock again, no matter how brief.

Long live the kings.

Most Anticipated of 2016: #5 Childish Gambino Breaks the Internet

Where on earth is Childish Gambino?

It was a pretty quiet year for Donald Glover the musician. After the critical success of his sophomore album, Because the Internet, Childish Gambino was radio silent for most of 2015 – even his Twitter account went blank. Outside of the music world, Glover made appearances in movies like “The Martian” and “The Lazarus Effect”, and his comedy series, “Atlanta”, was recently picked up by FX.

Glover has always been multi-talented, combining his comedy, acting, writing and music into a whirlwind of cultural force. Even during the days of his coming out party while on the cast of “Community”, it was clear that Glover was destined for greatness. As 2016 begins, the line between Glover the rapper and Glover the everything else may be murkier than ever, but we’re still holding out hope for a return of Gambino before year’s end.

Because the Internet succeeded with its refusal to give into pretense, demolishing preconceived notions of a lack of maturity that spurred from the release of his debut, Camp. Sometimes funny, often heart wrenching, always pointed, that album mined the depths of the millennial psyche in the Internet age, proving Gambino to be far more than a joke rapper. With a voice that distinct and contemplative, we eagerly await whatever comes next, music or otherwise.

Most Anticipated of 2016: #6 AFI Reignite the Fire

The Sorrow is Sacred

It’s been a tradition for the better part of a decade and a half that AFI releases a new album every three years. The only album to buck this trend was Burials, arriving four years after Crash Love. With their last release arriving in the fall of 2013, the band’s new project should be either done or nearing completion by the end of the year.

AFI’s releases are relentlessly ambitious and each record unique. It defines a certain part of the band’s career. And their fans are ravenous for anything new. AFI have tread ground through goth metal, hardcore, rock and the biggest ‘fuck you’ to pop music ever created with Crash Love. Trying to predict what comes next is near impossible, which is just part of the band’s charm.

If nothing else, the band hasn’t been on a proper tour since 2014. Even if the album itself doesn’t quite fit into 2016, the band should be gearing up in the fall to start a wave of shows across the country in some form or another. AFI is one of the best live bands anyone can get a chance to see. Jade Puget’s guitar work is next to godly on stage, and Davy Havok’s ability to switch between one of the best singers in the scene to one of the best screamers is breathtaking.

With a new Blaqk Audio album finished and ready for release, Havok and Puget are free to focus on their main project. There’s no telling what their new album will sound like, but it will be a reinvention and reinvigoration, guaranteed to have fans combing the songs lyric by lyric until 2019.

In Defense of the Genre

There are few bands who truly take the term “reinvention” to heart the way that Say Anything’s Max Bemis does. With an extremely loyal fanbase still hypnotized by …Is a Real Boy, Say Anything inspires a unique sound every record, even going so far as to remove all of his signature guitar work and replace it with synth and orchestral instruments on the fantastic Hebrews. It’s difficult to predict what type of album will be next, but it’s guaranteed to force the fans to argue where it ranks amongst the rest of them for the next year.

The other reason to be excited is that Max Bemis is extremely, and unapologetically honest in his songwriting. The lyrics are bittersweet and hopeful at best and horrifically brutal at worst. His storytelling is enchanting and finds themes that other bands skim the edges of, if not avoid altogether. Although Bemis has been much more positive for the last several years, it hasn’t impacted his ability to write engaging lyrics that hold the listener’s attention just as much as guitar solos.

Bemis is one of the most prolific writers in the scene, and has been since he caught the nation’s attention over a decade ago, and personifies the phrase “unafraid to experiment.” Each album feels fresh and tends to provide an update to past releases, making the entire discography relevant again.

If nothing else, the chance to read interviews with Max Bemis as he explains the new album, attempts to explain what it sounds like, and describes his mindset with it are almost as entertaining as the album itself.

BONUS:
There have been rumors for a long time that Two Tongues, the side project for members of Say Anything and Saves the Day (Yay Chris Conley!) would be releasing an album in 2015, spurred by a tweet from Max Bemis early last year. Unfortunately, Two Tongues didn’t materialize last year, but if work was underway on a new album, it may be the first new release from the band since 2009. Until concrete details are released, it’s not a good time to get one’s hopes up, but at least there is a good possibility that it will come sometime in the near future.

Filling the Blank Space

Just over 14 months after the release of the most successful album of her career, coupled with numerous award nominations and a massive world tour, we’re already anticipating what’s next for Taylor Swift. In doing so, we recognize that it’s wholly possible (even likely) that Ms. Swift rides the continuous waves of 1989 all the way through 2016. But we hope that isn’t the case.

Swift has a history of proclaiming her need for “time off” shortly after the release and support of her albums, only to resurface sooner than expected with another offering. Now six singles into the lauded pop tour de force that is 1989, it’s hard to believe that Swift isn’t thinking about what comes next.

Her place atop today’s pop music mountain alongside the likes of Adele and Beyoncé is in no danger of crumbling, but in a world driven by the moment, there’s a constant clamor for something new. While Swift could easily coast through 2016 in relative silence without missing a beat, here’s hoping she’s ready to make some more noise.

Swift’s career trajectory has been astonishing to watch – from innocent pop princess to pop culture’s biggest action hero, there’s no denying her ability for sonic and personal growth. Wherever she goes next, our collective attention is sure to follow. Pop a wheelie on the zeitgeist? Nah, T-Swift holds it in the palm of her hand.

To put it bluntly, our predictions haven’t always been correct. Now in our third year of anticipating new music, we find ourselves still excited for what’s to come – even if some of it doesn’t actually happen. This isn’t our crystal ball, though; this is more of a wish list for 2016.
